Peace & Smile Carnival Interview / the GazettE on "DISTRESS AND COMA"

-First of all, congratulations on the great success of the PS COMPANY 10th anniversary concert, Peace & Smile Carnival. Today, we’d like to look back the event, which is still burning in our minds, and ask about the GazettE in 2009. Thank you for giving us this interview today.

”Thank you, too!”

-First, please tell us how you feel now, just after the 10th anniversary concert.

Reita “Well, right after the event, I felt like “I’ve done it.” In both a good way and a bad way…(Laughs).”

-Tell me what you mean exactly by the “good way”.

Reita “We’d thought about wearing traditional New Year’s clothing and playing hard… but it was much harder than I thought to play in hakama. But, anyway, the fans were really glad to see us in our costumes, so it was fine.”

-I see. Then, what about the bad way?

Reita “The bad thing was, you know… I stepped on my hems a lot and my sleeves touched my guitar. The costume obstructed my performance. (Laughs.)”

Aoi “(Laughs)”

Reita “Well, it was New Year’s Day, so, I couldn’t do anything about that. (Laughs)”

-Yeah. It was a special occasion. (Laugh) How about you, Aoi?

Aoi “Ummm. I think it was a great honor to perform with so many other artists on the same stage.”

-Then, Ruki?

Ruki “Well… We haven’t had this kind of event for a while, so I enjoyed it a lot. But, how can I say this? I just think we could have done something more interesting. Something more…”

-Do you mean something more for your performance on stage?

Ruki “Well, like, something more musically… I just think I could play more with other bands. I know it may not go well, but, ummm. For the most part, I would be able to enjoy it.”

-Then, we look forward to your collaboration with the other bands during the 20th anniversary event.

Ruki “20th anniversary… We are over 30, but I hope we have that much energy at that time. (Laughs.)”

-Then, how about you, Kai?

Kai “As for the event itself, I was able to enjoy it a lot. But, to be honest, it was New Year’s, so we couldn’t prepare much. It was too hard to have rehearsal. I was relieved when we finished, the moment when we had done our performance.”

-Lastly, you, Uruha.

Uruha “It was our first event in a long time. We were not able to have much time for that, so I feel like it finished very quickly. We’ve been doing one-man shows for a while, so I felt 30 minutes was too short. Like, I could do more, starting now!!”

-About the staging, it was different from other concerts-- 13,000 people surrounding the stage at Budokan from all directions. On such a stage, did you notice anything of special appeal to the GazettE itself?

Ruki “Well, what. I didn’t look back much. I didn’t feel anything special. “

Aoi “I tried not to go on the catwalk a lot, or to be too excited.”

-Not to be too excited?

Aoi “…Well, how can I say this… If I go on the catwalk too much, the band will lose coherency. The audience has to look around the stage. I think it’s not like the GazettE. I want the audience to see and listen to the music our 5 members put together. That’s it.”

-It was a real sight to see all 5 members headbanging in a line together. Did you see the audience headbanging all around you?

Uruha “Uhh, when they headbang, usually we are doing it, too. (Laughs)”

“(Laughs loudly)”

-Certainly…! You shook your heads, too. (laughs)
As Reita said before, wearing hakama was a bit of a mismatch, but somehow suited to you; it turned out great. How did you decide what to wear?

Aoi “Actually, we didn’t have anything to wear at the time. (laughs)”

“(laughs)”

Uruha “Sweatshirts or hakama (laughs)”

Aoi “Since we had to choose from those two… then, hakama. (laughs)”

Ruki “We only had two choices. (laughs)”

-Then, you played, despite knowing it may be difficult to play in hakama..

Aoi “It was nothing but difficult to play in hakama.”

Uruha “We should have worn sweatshirts…”

Kai “You’re a real stickler for these things. (laughs) Anyway, we had a huge impact.”

-That’s right. All the people in house felt that the GazettE had done something special.
What about your set list? As Uruha said, you only performed 5 songs in 30 minutes. How did you choose those songs?

Ruki “There was the limit on time, and ballad songs take too long…but we expected that when we knew what the event was going to be like. There were other bands, too, so we had to make sure to do something that was unique to our band. You know, that’s the kind of event it is. So… we chose songs that would add some spice to the event itself.”

-By the way! Who would you pick if you chose the MVP of the GazettE from January 3rd?

Aoi “An MVP amongst the members? …Definitely, it’s me.”

-Wow! Yourself!

Reita “So, OK.”

(Everyone laughs)

Aoi “…But, no. I can’t decide by myself! (laughs)”

(Everyone laughs again)

-Oh, didn’t you choose yourself? (laughs)

Aoi “Well… It may be the audience.”

-Wow! Thank you for such a perfect comment. (laughs)

Aoi “Um? (laughs) …Right? Each member has their own role in completing the GazettE… Please make that sentence bold. (laughs)”

Aoi “Right. I said so.”

-You must have had a good start for 2009, spending New Year’s Day with your fans. Please tell us about your schedule from now on. First, you announced a concert at Makuhari Messe on March 10th. Could you tell us about the concert? Why did you schedule this concert?

Ruki “No special reason. We won’t have concerts for a while. (laughs)”

Aoi “Our bank accounts are running out of money…”

Reita “Hey! (laughs)”

Ruki “We’ll release our single around that time, and it’s just our 7th anniversary, anyway. Well, it’s before the release of our single. We thought that we could only do one concert before the release.”

Today, January 3rd, 2009, was the Peace & Smile Carnival event at Tokyo’s Nippon Budoukan, a huge festival of the artists of PS Company held in honour of PSC’s 10th anniversary. Every artist associated with PS Company took the stage today: from opening acts SuG and SCREW to major players Kagrra,, Kra, alicenine., theGazettE and 雅-miyavi-. Each act put on a fantastic performance, making it obvious that each is a shining jewel in the PSC crown.

Below is an exclusive, day-of mini report from the epic event that finished merely hours ago. Keep reading for a special glimpse into the course of the night, which will hopefully tide you over until our long, detailed report is posted within the next couple of days. Thirteen thousand fans gathered outside the famous Nippon Budoukan today, most of whom arrived at least three hours early to stand in a phenomenally long line waiting to buy merchandise from each of the seven artists that would later perform inside. musicJAPANplus spent this time preparing another Fashion

The doors finally opened at 3:00, and the show began at 4:00; people slowly filed in starting at three on the dot, but by five minutes to four there were throngs of latecomers running to the main doors to hastily flash their tickets and receive flier packets before dashing inside to try and find their seats before the concert began.

Not a moment late, the lights inside fell dark and an introductory video began to play on video screens that hung over the stage in the middle of the venue. For today’s show, the stage was set up in the middle of the center ‘arena’ section, and the seats on all sides of the octagonal hall were filled by eager fans who screamed with glee the instant the overhead lights faded out. Opening act SuG took the stage first, and performed two songs to a packed audience in which every single person, no matter how good their ticket, clapped, cheered and danced around. When they finished their two songs, SuG left the stage, and overhead the music video of their latest release “Umbilical” played on the video screens while the stage was prepared for the next artist.

SCREW came next, eliciting massive screams and deep growls from all over Nippon Budoukan, throwing the entire venue into bright purple light as soon as they set foot on the stage. SCREW also played two songs then waved in appreciation of the deafening screams and cheers their performance earned before vacating the stage. Their music video “Gather Roses” played while the stage was prepared for what was next to come.

Though the audience expected Kagrra, to appear next, it was MIYAVI and Keiyuu (of Kra) who came to the stage in traditional hakama, acting as the evening’s MCs to wish everyone a happy new year and direct the concert’s program. After about ten minutes of their chatting, both with each other and with the fanatic audience, the two left the stage and Kagrra, came out. They performed six songs, including their new single “Uzu” as well as the recent “Shigatsu Tsuitachi” and old-time favourite “Urei”. Isshi held a folding fan in his hand, with which he danced as he sang, and the whole band wore what looked like the top layers of traditional kimono over more casual, comfortable clothes. Guitarist Shin wowed the audience with his skill playing the traditional Japanese koto, and at least 80% of the fans all around the venue produced folding fans to mimic Isshi’s movements as he danced to Kagrra,’s beautiful, distinctly Japanese and faintly traditional rock. After they left the stage, the music video for “Uzu” played overhead. A short interview with Isshi followed, conducted back stage.

Kra took the stage next, and played five fantastic songs that included their most recent single “Amaoto wa Chopin no Shirabe” and the fan favourite “Buriki no Hata” in which Keiyuu encouraged the fans to sing the song’s bridge a cappella several times while all four members watched and listened with huge smiles on their faces. Keiyuu himself played the piano twice: for the very first song that was simply called “Keiyuu piano solo”, and during “Amaoto wa Chopin no Shirabe”. Mai and Yuura pleased the fans who sat behind the stage by constantly running around the walkways that lined the round stage, playing their guitars as they walked around and greeted the eager fans behind them. When they finished their set, the music video for their new song “Marry”, which will be on their upcoming album “Life~today is a good day to die~”. Keiyuu and Yasuno gave a few minutes’ interview on the video screens in the remaining time before the next act would perform.

Screams rang out across Budoukan simply when alicenine.’s logo flashed across the overhead screens, and fans jumped to their feet to scream and shout with happiness as the band took the stage to play the five songs that made up their set. Fans produced miniature flashlights that danced like fireflies all around the venue while the band performed “Velvet”, and the lights shined to match the following song, “RAINBOWS”. The fans sent up crazy saku arm gestures and screamed their hearts out when the last note of “Blue planet” was played, and the music video for “the beautiful name” played overhead after the band had left the stage. Shou and Tora sat for a short interview while the stage was situated, then the lights again fell dark to prepare the audience for the next artist.

The air was filled with howls, screams, shrieks and growls when theGazettE’s logo lit up on the screens overhead, and soon all five members strode onto the stage dressed in traditional blue hakama. They played five songs that elicited a lot of violent head banging, yelling and wild thrashing, all performed in perfect unison by 99% of the audience, and their set ended with Reita tossing his bass up into the air as Ruki shouted out, “Thank you Budoukan!!” Another brief interview followed, and then the lights darkened again as the audience waited for the final performer to take the stage.

MIYAVI’s performance began with a video that ran overhead, showing footage from his world tour that included messages promoting peace, love, happiness and music. The audience was so focused on the video and its messages, which were written in both English and Japanese, that they almost didn’t notice the man himself taking the stage in the dark until he began to play and sing the first song, ““Aishiteru” Kara Hajimeyou”. He was joined on stage by his beat boxer, two dancers, a drummer and new DJ to play five songs that included “Aho Matsuri”, during which members of Kra, alicenine., Kagrra and SuG ran onto the stage while MIYAVI danced around in a happi coat with a pink folding fan adorned with extravagant feathers.

“It’s time for the PSC All Stars!” Miyavi declared after his last song, and Keiyuu of Kra joined him on stage as an MC once again, and called each band back to the stage one by one to introduce them to the audience. He asked a spokesperson from each band for their thoughts on the day’s show, and made a point to overact both the roles of interviewer and spokesperson when he asked himself as a member of Kra. MIYAVI accidentally revealed (ahead of the official announcement) that a DVD of the performance was going to be made; he then revealed a large drum of Japanese sake around which a member of each band gathered with a mallet to pound the top in unison and officially usher in the year 2009. Everyone clapped together at the same instant the mallets hit the sake drum, then all thirty men on stage stood and joined hands and instructed the audience to do so as well regardless of whether the next person was a friend or stranger. With everyone holding hands, MIYAVI counted off and everyone jumped up into the air together, bringing the show to a definite close on a high, happy note.

"aiiih~ Uruha-chan kalo manyun imut deeh...temenin om jalan jalan yuuuk~~HAHAHAHAHAHA !" ledek Aoi sambil coel coel paha Uruha.

"AOI SEMPRUUUUUUUULL ! ! JANGAN MANGGIL GUW PAKE EMBEL EMBEL -CHAAAAAN ! !" Uruha ngamuk en ngelemparin si Aoi pake peralatan kosmetiknya.

"hueheheheheee...piisu mas, eh---mbaa...kita damai~" ucap Aoi yang uda terkapar terkena serangan bedak en eyeshadow Uruha. "nyok ah ! hari ini kan kita ada rapat sama anak anak PSC" ucap Aoi. Uruha cuman dumel dumel sambil nerusin bedakannya.

"minna-san, I'M COMIIIING ! !" ucap Aoi dengan semangat.

"hai~" ucap Uruha yang dateng di belakang Aoi.

"hai Uruha-chan ! aio duduk sebelah guw ! !" ucap Miyavi sambil nepuk nepuk bangku disebelahnya yang kosong.

"enak aja ! perempuan keak Uruha-san tuh ga bole duduk di sebelah Kamisama no Fanservice ! nyawanya bisa terancam ! !" ucap Hiroto ngomel ke Miyavi.

"anou Hippon, lu masih ga nyadar juga yah ? ? Uruha tu cowok ! wakatta ? COWOK, LELAKI, PERIA, OTOKO, JANTAN !" ucap Saga sambil tepok tepok pala Hiroto.

"aduh Saga-cchi ini gimana sih ? ! moso wanita kayak Uruha-san itu cowo ? wong kawaii gitu ! Saga-cchi rabun nih matanya !" Hiroto masi ngotot aja.

"GRAOOOOO ! UDAH SALAH MALAH NYALAHIN ORANG ! GUW BANTAI JUGA NI ANAAAAAAAAKK ! !" si Saga mencak mencak.

"sabar Saga-kun, sabar ! nyebut nyebut !" ucap Chiyu sambil narik Saga jauh jauh dari Hiroto.

"he ? Saga-cchi kenapa sih ?" ucap Hiroto dengan polosnya sampe rasanya pengen di hajar ama semua nak PSC.^^a

Uruha yang makin bingung aja memutuskan duduk di sebelah Shou.

"yang sabar aja ya Uruha...emang susah punya muka cantik" hibur Shou.

"haaaah~ io Shou. mesti sabar ni guw. pengen deh kali kali jadi cowo tulen" curhat Uruha.

"haha. kan gampang. tunjukin aja sama mereka kekuatan pria sejati !" Shou begaya pose pahlawan bertopeng.

"wuih~ kata kata lu bener juga ye, Shou. guw mesti nunjukin ke mereka kalo guw cowo sejati !" ucap Uruha semangat 44,999.

"HOOKKKK !" Kai yang lagi makan sate padang langsung makan satenya se-tusuk tusukannya.

"URUHA ? ! ? !" ucap mereka tak percaya.

"--hai--" Uruha langsung senyum en nyengir kuda. "--aneh ya ?"

"BANGET !" ucap Ruki. "wat hepen aya naon ama rambut lo ? !"

"hehe...guw potong rambut." ucap Uruha sambil megang rambutnya yang jadi cepak.

"o mai goaaaat~~ kenapa lu malah motong aset berharga kitaaaa ! !" si Kai setress.

"hehe" Uruha cengar cengir. "abisnya lu pada ngeledek guw Julia Peres ato segala nama cewe itu siih~, dah gitu si Hiroto ngira guw cewe beneran pula ! kan guw ga terima."

"tapi ya jangan ampe potong rambut dooong ! ! Bou an cafe aja malah bangga di bilang cewe ! !" Reita yang baru tuntas 'berperang melawan penjajah' di kamar mandi pun kembali dengan selamat sehat sentosa.

"yaaah~ tapi setidaknya dia ga motong aset yang paling berharga dari dirinya. maksut guw congornya. kalo tu congor ampe di potong juga, guw ga jamin kalo besok dia masih anggota The Gazette." ucap Kai asal yang berakibat mulutnya bersimbah darah di jait pake senar gitar sama Uruha. *ngga. kalo ini mah boongan*

"Uruha...sayang banget lu motong pendek rambut loo~" ucap Aoi.

"LHA TERUS GIMANA ? ! GUW BETEK KALO DI ANGGEP CEWE ! guw maunya di anggap cowo cantik !" Uruha dumel dumel.

"mang sapa ja yang bilang lu cewe ?" tanya Ruki.

"errrr------" Uruha membuka kembali otak ingatannya. "-----si Hiroto doang sih..."

"bah ! cuman Hiroto doang ? ! mati aja lu." ucap Aoi.

"tauk lu ! guw kira semua nak PSC. kalo Hiropon doang mah, kan elu tinggal nunjukin pedang lu aja !" ucap Reita sewot.

"terus guw mesti gimana ? guw juga ga mau tauk punya rambut pendek ! ini tuntutan sekenario !" *Uruha ngelirik tajem ke arah author*

"yaaaah~ tenang aja...jaman sekarang pan semua serba gampang. tinggal buka tutup, masukin bumbu, tuang aer panas, tutup selama 3 menit. TING ! pop mie jadi deh !" ucap Ruki sambil nyeruput Pop Mie.

"aho~" ucap Uruha.

Hiroto keluar dari MCK dengan tatapan yang kosong dan tanpa ekspresi. Uruha berjalan dengan bangga di belakangnya.

"wuiih~ si Hiroto lu apain ?" ucap Byou nanya ke Uruha.
